Melbourne Cup Day 2026 falls on Tuesday 3 November. Everyone plans the outfit, the sweep and the marquee — far fewer people plan how they will actually get to Flemington and, more importantly, home again. Here is a practical guide to the Carnival dates, the drop-off, the trip home and when to lock in a car.
The 2026 Spring Racing Carnival dates
The Carnival builds over a month. Caulfield Cup is Saturday 17 October at Caulfield, and the Cox Plate is Saturday 24 October at Moonee Valley. Then Cup Week at Flemington: Derby Day on Saturday 31 October, Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday 3 November, Oaks Day on Thursday 5 November and Stakes Day on Saturday 7 November.
Derby Day and Cup Day are the two busiest days of our year. If either is on your list, book those first.
Why driving yourself is the hard way
Epsom Road backs up from mid-morning, the on-course car parks sell out weeks ahead, and even if you find a spot, someone in the group is not drinking for the day. Public-transport specials run all day, but they run to the timetable and the crush — not to your lunch booking or your marquee.
Getting in: the drop-off
A chauffeured car drops your group as close to your gate as is legally allowed and parks off-site. We generally use the Smithfield Road and Gate 1 side rather than fighting Epsom Road, and we confirm the closest set-down point to your gate the week of the race — so nobody is walking the length of the straight in heels.
Getting home: the part people forget
After the last race, tens of thousands of people try to leave at once. The taxi and rideshare queues on Cup Day are famous for the wrong reasons, and surge pricing is brutal. With a booked car, the pickup point and time window are agreed before you leave home. If the group wants to stay for a drink, the car waits; if someone needs to leave early, a split pickup can be arranged.
Which car for a race day
For a group of 8 to 18 who want the day to start the moment they get in, a stretch Hummer is the classic choice — the Black Hummer 6x6 seats up to 18, and the White Hummer and Pink Hummer seat 15, with BYO welcome for passengers 18 and over. For a smaller VIP group or a corporate host collecting clients, the Rolls Royce Tribute makes the arrival.
When to book
Four to eight weeks ahead for Cup Week — and earlier for Derby Day and Cup Day, when the larger Hummers go first. Corporate bookings that need a car held for the whole afternoon should be locked in even earlier. Our race-day pages let you check the price and availability with the date already filled in.
Common Questions

Tuesday 3 November 2026 — the first Tuesday of November, as always. Derby Day is the Saturday before (31 October), Oaks Day is Thursday 5 November and Stakes Day is Saturday 7 November.
How far ahead should I book a car for the Melbourne Cup?
Four to eight weeks for Cup Week, and earlier for Derby Day and Cup Day — they are the two busiest days of our year and the larger Hummers book out first.
Can we drink in the car on the way to Flemington?
Yes — BYO is welcome on the Hummers and stretch limousines for passengers 18 and over, with ice and glassware supplied.
What happens after the last race?
We agree a pickup point and time window before the day, and the car is waiting — no taxi queue and no surge pricing. Split pickups can be arranged if part of the group leaves early.
