The Boxing Day Test is a five-day fixture in the dead centre of the Christmas break, when public transport runs a holiday timetable and the city is at its quietest. That is exactly when a private car is easiest to justify: the roads move, parking near the G is still tight and expensive, and the trains are less frequent than a working day. A chauffeured car drops your group at the gate each morning you attend and is back at stumps, however the session has gone.

Between Christmas and New Year the trains and trams thin out, and if the Test runs deep into the evening session the last services get uncomfortable. A car removes that variable — set drop-off in the morning, pickup at stumps or whenever your group has had enough of a slow day.
