Daylesford Day Trip from Melbourne

Mineral springs, a long lunch and the Macedon Ranges — without anyone watching the clock or the road.

Daylesford has been a getaway since the gold-rush days, when people came for the mineral springs. It still is: bathhouses at Hepburn Springs, a lake ringed with walking tracks, a main street of cafes, bookshops and galleries, and some of the best regional dining in Victoria. It sits about ninety minutes north-west of Melbourne — close enough for a day, far enough that a chauffeur makes the difference between a relaxing day and a tiring one.

A typical Daylesford day

Leave Melbourne mid-morning and head up the Calder Freeway into the Macedon Ranges. A coffee stop at Woodend or a detour past Hanging Rock breaks the drive. In Daylesford, most visitors split the day between a soak at Hepburn Springs and a slow lunch in town, then a walk around Lake Daylesford or through the Convent Gallery before heading home in the late afternoon.

Spa bookings and timing

The bathhouses book out on weekends, so reserve your session first and build the day around it. Send us the session time and we plan the departure so you arrive unhurried. Spa sessions are booked directly with the venue.

Milestone birthdays and girls’ getaways

Daylesford is a favourite for a 40th or 50th, a mother-and-daughters day or a quieter hens. Bring a bottle for the drive — drinks are fine on board for anyone 18 or older — and nobody has to be the designated driver. A big group can travel together in the Mercedes Sprinter; for a bit of theatre on arrival, choose a Hummer.
