Yarra Valley or Mornington Peninsula for a Winery Tour from Melbourne?

The Yarra Valley is roughly an hour from the city, north-east, and the cellar doors are relatively close together once you are there. The Mornington Peninsula is a similar distance south, but the good cellar doors are more spread out across the hills between Red Hill, Main Ridge and Merricks, so there is more driving between stops.

Both are far enough that nobody in the group should be driving after a tasting — which is the point of a chauffeured tour.

The Yarra Valley is known for cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, sparkling wine (Domaine Chandon is here), and a mix of large estates and small producers. The Mornington Peninsula is Pinot Noir and Chardonnay country too, generally smaller and more boutique, with a reputation for quality over volume.

If your group wants variety and some big-name estates, the Yarra Valley. If they want boutique Pinot and a more intimate feel, the Peninsula.

The Yarra Valley is rolling green hills and vineyards, with the option to add a hot-air balloon at dawn, the Healesville Sanctuary, or a chocolaterie stop. The Mornington Peninsula pairs the vineyards with a coastline — you can add the hot springs at Fingal, a beach, or a stop at Arthurs Seat for the view.

A full day in either region is a pickup from your Melbourne home or hotel, three to five cellar doors with a lunch booking in the middle, and a return in the late afternoon. The Yarra Valley fits a tighter loop; the Peninsula spends more of the day on the road between stops, so plan for one or two fewer cellar doors.

A travel component applies for both regions and is confirmed upfront. The vehicle — a Mercedes Sprinter or a Hummer for a group, the BMW X5M for a couple — carries the cooler space for anything you buy.
